Title II, Part A

Title II, Part A

Highly Qualified Teachers and Principals

The purpose of Title II, Part A is to help increase the academic

achievement of all students by helping schools and school districts ensure that all teachers are highly qualified to teach.

Funds may be used to:
  • Pay the salaries of highly qualified teachers hired for the purpose of reducing class size
  • Recruit and retain highly qualified teachers and principals
  • Provide research-based, high-quality professional development activities
  • Support the acquisition of advanced degrees
  • Provide training activities to enhance the involvement of parents

The Lauderdale County School District does not hire paraprofessionals who are not highly qualified and has not hired non-highly qualified paraprofessionals since 2006.

The Personnel Director works with the principals to ensure that teachers are highly qualified at the time of hire. The Personnel Director and principals try to ensure that all staff teach courses in the area in which they are highly qualified.

Title I, Title II and SPED funds were used during the 2012-2013 school year to cover the cost of the Praxis examination fee for non-highly qualified teachers to become highly qualified. Title I and Title II funds were used to purchase Praxis study materials.

It is impossible to predict the future. For example, a teacher may meet the definition of highly qualified in one school year, but not in the following school year because it may be necessary for him/her to teach a class that he/she did not teach in the preceding year. Therefore, Title I funds will be reserved to assist any teacher who does not meet the highly qualified status for each course that he/she teaches. While every attempt is made to ensure that all teachers are highly qualified prior to employment, funds will be reserved to meet the unexpected.
